Teodor Baconschi
Career diplomat, Mr. Baconschi was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs on December 23rd, 2009.
Previously, he was Ambassador to the Republic of France, the Principality of Monaco and the Principality of Andorra (September 2007 – December 2009); Ambassador to the Republic of Portugal (2002 – 2004), Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) and accredited in the Republic of San Marino and with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (1999-2001).
He was Presidential Advisor on political affairs with the Presidential Administration between October 2006 and August 2007. At the Central headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he held the offices of State Secretary for Global Affairs (January 2005 – September 2006) and Director General in 2001.He holds the diplomatic rank of Ambassador since 2006.
Before joining the diplomatic career, he was Director of Anastasia Publishers, in Bucharest; editor-in-chief of the “Spiritual Life” (on the National Public Television), advisor with the Ministry of Culture and editor with the Biblical and Mission Institute’s Publishing Office of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
He published over 10 books in French and Romanian (under the writer signature Teodor Baconsky) and speaks English, French and Italian.
He is affiliate member of the International Association of Patristic Studies (AIEP, Paris), founding member of the Reflection Group for the Renewal of the Church (Bucharest), member of the New Europe College (Bucharest) and member of the Social Dialog Group (Bucharest).
He was awarded several distinctions: the Grand Cross of the Order of Pius IX (Holy Seat); Grand Officer of the Order of Saint Agatha / San Marino, Officer of the National Order of the “Faithful Service” (Romania), Grand Officer of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity, Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit (Portugal).
He graduated from the Bucharest Theological University Institute in 1985, went for an ABD degree (Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies) at Université de Paris IV-Sorbonne (1991), was awarded a PhD in Religious Anthropology and Compared History of Religions at Université de Paris IV-Sorbonne (1994) and then took post-doctoral studies as a Fellow of the New Europe College of Bucharest (1996).
He was born on February 14th, 1963, in Bucharest, is married and has two children.
