Romania will grant humanitarian aid worth EUR 50.000 to the Republic of Haiti, the Spokesperson for the Executive, Mrs. Ioana Muntean has stated, at the end of the Executive meeting. The sum will be granted from the Foreign Ministry’s 2010 budget for development assistance, via the World Food Programme.
Mrs. Ioana Muntean has stated that “Romania joins thus the international community’s effort to assist the Republic of Haiti, seriously hit by the January 12th quake, answering the January 15th UN call for emergency assistance”.
The Spokesperson for the Executive has further stated that as EU member state, Romania also participates in the efforts undertaken at EU level to solve the humanitarian crisis from Haiti. In this respect, on January 18th, the European Commission announced the earmarking from EU budget, of an emergency humanitarian aid worth EUR 30 million, to Haiti, alongside contributions of EUR 100 million for immediate actions devoted to the reconstruction of governmental infrastructures and EUR 200 million for the country’s reconstruction and development.
Romania participates with a 21 policemen contingent to UN Mission from Haiti (MINUSTAH), making thus its contribution to the efforts to normalize the situation in this country.
